Soldiering On: Amazing start to year with honour
Column by Nikki Scott BEM of Scotty's Little Soliders, Friday, January 1, 2021
Happy New Year to you all. I think we all deserve for 2021 to be a good one!
I had a lovely Christmas. We were at home and the best thing was having time with my family.
We had lots of lovely food, played games, went out for walks and just generally enjoyed quality time together. We also celebrated Dani’s first birthday.
She was one on December 29. I can’t believe she’s one already. In fact, I wrote about her birth in my very first Lynn News column, so I have been writing these for a year now!
I expect many of you will have tuned in to Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? on Boxing Day.
For anyone who doesn’t know, Piers Morgan was on and he was playing to win money for Scotty’s.
It was nail-biting stuff! It was so strange being at home in front of the television and knowing that the way Piers answered his questions could have a huge impact on our charity and all the bereaved Forces children we support.
The £32,000 question was a tough one, and unfortunately Piers went with the wrong answer, which meant he walked away with £1,000 for Scotty’s, but he is so generous that he has said he will donate £15,000 out of his own pocket, so we are incredibly grateful.
Also, aside from the money, Piers has done an amazing job of raising awareness of Scotty’s and that is so important, so he is an absolute legend and we’ll always be thankful to him.
Another thing that is pretty exciting is that I have been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) in the 2021 Honours List. I actually can’t believe it! I find these things a little awkward, because everything we do at Scotty’s is a team effort, so I’m accepting this on behalf of the whole Scotty’s team.
We are constantly identifying more support that bereaved Forces children need and of course there’s still so many children out there we hope we can reach and help. We have lots of plans to enable us to deliver more support and to more children, we are therefore expanding this year.
We have a new member of the team joining this month who has a huge amount of experience in supporting bereaved children, so she will be a real asset.
We are also hoping to grow the team further and have two roles that we are actively recruiting for, plus we have various positions that we are hoping to fill at some point, these include family support, marketing, brand management, administration and lots more, so please take a look on our website.

It’s a really exciting time for Scotty’s, and for me personally it’s incredible seeing how far we have come since we began in 2010.
We have actually outgrown our office on North Lynn Industrial Estate, and when we can finally all work from an office again, we won’t have enough space for everyone!
We are currently looking onto options, so I’m not sure where will move to yet. We certainly want to stay in Lynn, but watch this space, we’ll hopefully be packing boxes at some point this year!
