August sporting scenes down the years from the pages of the Lynn News
August 2000: These six golfers from Swaffham Golf Club reached the last four of the National Nine competition – open to all nine-hole clubs throughout the country. The sextet of Gordon Gale, Malcolm Hardingham, Trevor Barnard, Ken Reed, Arnie Giles and Gerry Holland were pictured before heading off to the neutral venue at Loughborough for their semi-final against a team from Colne. They had won four matches to reach the last four.
August 2003: Scorching weather did not deter more than 50 anglers from turning out for a charity event at Dent’s fishing lakes in Hilgay. Organised by Angela Bunkle, of Downham, it raised £376 for the Macmillan Care and Treatment Centre at Lynn’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital. She is pictured with, from left Ron Wesley, Paul Nichols, Dave Allen, Malcolm Nicholson and Bob Dent.
August 2003: Terrington King William ran out winners in the Coronation Cup final, beating Gaywood Park A by 76 shots to 68. After 15 ends King William held a ten-shot advantage before inspired bowling by Park captain David Farrow saw the margin reduced to just five shots after 19 ends, but the fightback was short-lived.
August 2001: Charity and golfers were all winners as the sun shone on the first classic event organised by Searles of Hunstanton and the Lynn News. Around £3,000 was raised which was split between the Cystic Fibrosis and Macmillan Nurses charities. August 2001: The Linnets were presented with new dug-outs – which conformed to Conference standard – by Colin Dawson Windows. They were handed over by Perry Dawson (right) from the company, to club chairman Colin Nichols. At the back are Colin Dawson, Linnets forward Kristian Jones, manager Tony Spearing, club mascot and commercial manager Peter Langford.
August 2001: Springwood Karate Club received new equipment courtesy of 24/7, the company which maintained electricity throughout East Anglia and London. Based at the Lynn high school, the club met on Wednesday evenings and in this picture the quartet of James Stock, Laura Stock, Nathan Miller and James Cutting demonstrate the new equipment.
August 2011: North West Norfolk MP Henry Bellingham pads up at the official opening of North Runcton Cricket Club’s new £20,000 practice facilities. Behind the stumps is Norfolk county coach Chris Brown, joined by club officials and members of the North Runcton Academy.
August 2011: Carpet bowls stalwart Betty Barlow, 94 years young, was still playing regularly at Pott Row village hall – and with a sharp eye for accuracy – having been a founder member of the club.
August 2011: West Norfolk youngsters are pictured with national coaches at an East Anglian Billiards Association coaching day held at Lynn’s Maltings Q Club.
