Brexit a Crown-ing beer glass achievement
I must admit that I have been a bit impatient for all the benefits of Brexit to begin to impact on our daily life, but the end of year statement by the Prime Minister demonstrated that they are on the way.
In particular he picked out, what was described in one national newspaper as a ‘key success’, the return of the Crown stamp to our pint glasses. There is no doubt that accurate measures have long been a strong defence against unscrupulous merchants and as far back as 1215, clause 35 of the Magna Carta demanded standard weights and measures for grain, wine, beer and cloth.
Even before then, the 10th century Saxon King Edgar kept the royal bushel which was the standard measure for grain.
