Good sports in Hunstanton, King’s Lynn, Runcton Holme, Swaffham and Walpole Cross Keys
In our weekly All Our Yesterdays feature, we look back at sport in West Norfolk…
1999: The Lynn News again gave its backing to promoting the Junior Linnets Club. With some of the members are, from left, Maurice Ebbs, manager Gary Mills, club organiser Jenny Ebbs and assistant manager Darren Gee.
2003: Three age group teams from Lynn Roller Hockey Club took part in the cup finals day at Peterborough – and came home with two gold medals. The minors (under 13s) beat Peterborough 3-2; the intermediates (U13-14) were hot favourites to win and duly beat Ely with goals in each half; the Under 11s paid the price for not taking their chances and had to settle for silver behind Peterborough. The teams are pictured here with their medals.
2014: Pupils at King’s Lynn Academy had an end-of-term treat with wrestling matches staged in the school hall, courtesy of Falling Starr Wrestling. This picture shows action from a bout between professionals Jimmy Starr and Furio. One special highlight was a tussle between two masked teachers, Paul Aldous (El Techo) and Aaron Blows (Hurricane Blows), who had trained with Jimmy Starr for two months.
2014: A bumper crowd at Lynn’s Norfolk Arena, saw GB beat Australia, the USA and Italy in the first event of the 2014 Monster Energy FIM Speedway World Cup. This is Heat 8 action with Tai Woffinden (red helmet) leading from Max Rund (white), while Italy’s Nicolas Vincentin is heading for a fall after losing control of his bike.
2012: Sports coach James Pollard had to be excused from his weekly PE sessions at Walpole Cross Keys Primary School – he was part of the team carrying the Olympic Torch through Norfolk. James is pictured here the next day when he took the torch into school to show the pupils.
2012: In the name of sportsmanship, members of Clackclose Guide Group units enjoy a moment of sunshine at their own mock Olympics at Runcton Holme.
2012: At the conclusion of a successful Hunstanton and District Open Bowls tournament, stalwart Basil Johnson was presented with an award from West Norfolk Borough councillor Elizabeth Nockolds. He was standing down as organiser/advisor after many years at the helm.
2012: Hunstanton Sailing Club celebrates a £44,950 grant from the Inspired Facilities Olympic Fund, money which would be put towards doubling the size of the seaside venue. Young members (from left) Mack Armstrong, Maisie Coleman, Evie Armstrong, Molly Sands, Oakie Letzer, Sonny Letzer, Danielle Durrant and Peter Fox join in the fun.
2012: Swaffham Cricket Club’s annual summer coaching week was open to members and children from local schools. County coaches Aaron Watson (left) and Ben Watson (right) were joined by club coaches Jordan Grass and Emma Hardy for this group photo, with five-year-old Dylan Hardy in the foreground.
