I Help Light The Love
Singing is good for the soul. We often sing in the office, harmonising like a 90’s boy band and believing that it is a lot more tuneful than perhaps our inner ear and the thin walls makes out.
As always I have Googled some inspiring quotes about this topic.
“The only thing better than singing is more singing” which is profound, and “A person can drop dead even while singing.”
Which is a slightly odd thing to say.
It has been great to see so many community choirs able to get together in person again, after holding their choral meetings via Zoom during the lockdowns and the pandemic.
I was in a church choir from the age of eight and I believe there is nothing better than actually being deafened by the bass singers in person and real spittle shared between musical buddies.
I used to attend choir practise on Tuesdays and Fridays and the most exciting part was when the choir master would whack out his flask of hot orange squash in the break. Good times.
A talented musician Damian Carruthers has moved back to Heacham and is making noise in the entertainment community in Hunstanton and around.
Having released a Christmas song for the Marie Curie trust, Damian has been instrumental (see what I did there) in encouraging musical creativity in the area.
Damian got a choir together from a facebook request for singers and I was lucky enough (they might disagree) to be part of the recording of the single at Sick Studios in Pentney/Narborough.
Singing in my bathroom with amazing acoustics, steam appearing as if it is a Celine Dion video and the neighbours banging on the wall shouting something that sounds like shut up, is not the same as being in a recording studio with a mic.
The group of ladies who responded to the request all ranged in age and vocals. From sopranos to me who likes doing the low bits.
Doing the oohs and aahs for a proper real released single is very exciting and after I’d found the studio in Pentney/Narborough having visited the local pub-chinese restaurant, asking for directions in the dark, it was a really fun experience.
It is called Light The Love by Damian’s band Rane and funds are going to a worthy cause.
Choirs are a good way to make friends and deafen people you have just met, sing out of tune and not be judged, and improve.
Singing improves mental health, helps feelings of isolation by being part of, and gives a social life that is based in friendship. My advice?
Sing like nobody’s listening. I do it all the time and my colleagues love it (er ... are you sure about that, Jenny? - Ed).
