Schools Memory Lane from today’s paper, Friday, May 19:

Two hundred schoolchildren crowded into the centre of Downham in May 2000 to celebrate the town’s literature day.

Some of the pupils are pictured here with the Town Mayor and Mayoress, David and Ann Murray, and Anglia TV presenter Helen McDermott (back row, right), who presented poetry competition prizes.

The children from the Hillcrest and Clackclose schools in the town, and from Wimbotsham Primary School, heard readings of the winning poems and additional pieces written by the youngsters.

All carried the theme of recycling or cutting down on rubbish and echoed the message of Anglia’s Waste Awareness Campaign.
