All Our Yesterdays: Looking back through the October King’s Lynn and Swaffham business pages from 2011 and 2016
In our weekly All Our Yesterdays feature, we look back through the October business pages from 2011 and 2016…
October 2011: New apprentices joining the team at the Lynn branch of electrical and mechanical engineering specialists, the Dodd Group, were Jaime Gamble (left) and Ben Whitby (right), pictured here with Coral Leggett the training advisor at the College of West Anglia and Chris Watson, operations manager at Dodd Group.
October 2011: Work on the £1.5 million refurbishment of Lynn’s Duke’s Head Hotel was about 80 per cent complete – but there was one slight hold-up when animal bones were found in a room ceiling. They are shown here by historian Dr Paul Richards and Gez Chetal from the hotel. The bones were about 300 years old and were thought to be of a cat, perhaps left in the ceiling to ward off evil spirits.
October 2011: A model of Lynn Library was the latest of the town’s historic buildings to be added to Caithness Crystal’s Lilliput Lane collection. Sculptor Jack Misslebrook (left) adds his signature to one of the models watched by Mark Sander, Caithness managing director.
October 2011: Caring staff at the Anglia Co-operative foodstore in Terrington St Clement were forging a special bond with the Lovell’s Hall School in Station Road. That included a six-week Pick-Up-A-Penny fundraising scheme which netted £200 for the school. From left are Isaac Carter (pupil at Lovell's Hall), Sharon Parnell (deputy store manager) and Petula Cooper (team leader), Jane Crossland and Ben Spriggs (both from Lovell's Hall).
October 2011: Steve and Tracy McGivern were the new managers at the House on the Green in North Wootton, promising a warm and friendly welcome to regulars and new customers.
October 2016: Garden centre Dobbies held a successful Christmas preview at its Campbell’s Meadow store in Lynn and the evening was also a fundraiser in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust.
October 2016: Moleys Coffee and Confectionery, on Norfolk Street, Lynn, installed a rocket from Iraq on its war memorial display, to generate interest and raise money for Bridge for Heroes and Help for Heroes. The café was run by Wendy Graver, who is holding a display board about the rocket, prepared by her husband Chris who had been in the RAF.
October 2016: Accountancy firm Grow Your Business officially opened up a new base in the old Swaffham Corn Exchange on the Market Place. From left, are Connie Langley, Conor Murray, Tim Bogel and Annie Turner (directors) and Swaffham Mayor Paul Darby.
October 2016: Staff at Premier Travel in Swaffham hoped to raise £500 for Cancer Research UK by getting on a static bike for 24 hours. From left are Kayleigh Rowland, Sarah Rowland and branch manager Leisa Pritt.
October 2011: Lynn business owners John and Rose Day, centre, join staff to celebrate their “fent-astic” achievement of being awarded a royal warrant. The Fent Shop (PF Day and Sons) in Broad Street, was founded in 1958 by John’s father, Peter Day.
October 2016: Newly launched in Lynn’s Norfolk Street was the Java Store, stocking an array of candles, handmade soaps and homewares. From left are business owner Howard Webb, Alison Garner, Charlotte Thurley, Mickala Groom, and Sarah Collison.
