King's Lynn Memory Lane: Queen Mother at Sandringham, South Wootton, Highgate Infants School, Congham World Snail Racing, Hunstanton and RAF Marham from 1997 to 2006

Lynn News reader Mrs Mary Fysh had a day out to remember in July 1997, when she received VIP treatment at the new MFI Homeworks store at Hardwick, Lynn.

Mrs Fysh, of South Wootton, won a Lynn News wordsquare competition and she was given right royal treatment by store manager Mr Mark Hitchcock. There was a chauffeur-driven ride in a Rolls Royce for Margaret who was accompanied by husband John, mother-in-law Margaret Fysh and family friend Bill Kent, a champagne reception, £250 to spend at the store and finally a slap-up meal at stylish Lynn restaurant Rococo’s, which were all part of the prize package.

ALL OUR YESTERDAYS:

July 2001: Just days from her 101st birthday, the Queen Mother was joined by Prince Charles at Sandringham Flower Show. They arrived and left the 120th show in style – in a horse-drawn carriage. On Saturday, August 4, thousands gathered outside Clarence House to cheer the Queen Mother on her 101st birthday, when she delighted crowds by touring in her electric buggy to accept gifts and flowers, despite her recent ill health. The Queen Mother died in her sleep on March 30, 2002. MLNF-01071192

All Our Yesterdays features Lynn News lookback pictures. The theme this week is "July Events".

July 2001: Four years outside the seat of power at Westminster for Conservative Henry Bellingham had ended in June’s General Election when he was returned for the fourth time as MP for North West Norfolk. Although he would be sitting on the opposition benches for the first time, he pledged that the area’s voice would be heard in the chamber. The Lynn News sent a reporter and photographer to see how he was settling in at his new offices. MLNF-0107858

July 2002: Angry council workers in West Norfolk showed their dissatisfaction with wages by fronting picket lines, including this one at the Woodlands home for the elderly in South Wootton. The strike, which involved more than a million workers across England and Wales, was organised by three local government trade unions – Unison, the Transport and General Workers Union and GMB. The unions rejected a proposed three per cent offer and called for a six per cent increase – an extra £1,750 a year. MLNF-0207791

July 2006: Hundreds of people enjoyed music in the sun at Hunstanton’s final street organ grinding festival, which raised nearly £1,000 for people living with a skin blistering condition. Pictured here are the festival organisers, Yvonne and Shon Gosling (front) with their Yorkshire Terrier Brie, and the 11-year-old Brummagem Bell organ, named after the medieval name for Birmingham. July 2006: Competition was keen with nearly 200 snails slithering in from far and wide – even from France – to take part in Congham’s annual World Snail Racing Championships. The winner, named Sydney, belonged to six-year-old Emma Hartley, of Castle Acre, and covered the 13-inch course in three minutes and 28 seconds. Hoping to win by a nose were these contestants with owners, from left Jessica Paterson, Lorna Paterson and Amy Fowles. MLNF-0607542

July 2006: It was a poignant moment for RAF Marham as three veteran Canberra aircraft flew together for the last time over their West Norfolk base. Service personnel and keen plane spotters watched the jets bow out gracefully by making a 300mph pass at 500ft over the main runway before landing and entering retirement – and the message on this Canberra says it all.
