The first official duty of new Fakenham Town Mayor, Mr Dennis Beare, in May 1994 was to present certificates to local Air Training Corps cadets.
At that time, it had become a tradition for town mayors to inspect members of 2534 (Fakenham) Squadron as one of their first engagements. Mr Beare was, however, the first mayor to visit the squadron at Fakenham High School following its move after the closure of RAF West Raynham which had been its base for 28 years.
Mr Beare, who had previously worked for the South African Embassy in London before retirement, presented enrolment and examination certificates to eleven cadets including Angela Raimondo (front). Photo: MLNF-9405152

All Our Yesterdays deals with Lynn News lookback pictures: "May good causes" is the theme this week.
In chronological order below are photos from the month of May in 2000, 2002 and 2004 – as shown in today's (Tuesday, May 31) Lynn News – the captions are within each photo.
May 2000: Kind-hearted staff at Watlington Medical Centre raised £500 for the Imperial Cancer Research Fund when taking part in a 5km Race for Life at Norwich. Practice manager Valerie Armstrong rounded up a team of ten staff members – bolstered to 13 by friends and family. The medical centre runners pictured here are, back row from left, Sheila Richardson, Caroline Marshall, Sue Buckland and Jackie Sanctuary; middle row: Mrs Armstrong, Julie Harkness, Angie Horton and Elaine Squires; front, Gail Clarkson and Ann Bloy. MLNF-000567829May 2000: A fashion show organised by Downham’s Clackclose Primary School Parent Teacher Association raised £136. The clothes were supplied by Zoom Fashions, of Northampton, and were modelled by staff and former pupils. Pictured from left are Lisa Smolen, Gemma Fairweather, Kate Corlett, Kayleigh Bragg, Emma Gray, Dawn Whing, Emma Cox and Morag Kitchener. MLNF-000581037May 2000: Lynn’s Marks and Spencer store came to the rescue when Lynn Nursery School put out an appeal for help towards turning a muddy corner of the school grounds into a sensory garden area. The store donated bulbs to plant in the new garden area and pictured here is Jenny Goldsmith from M&S (left) with headteacher Pauline Bradshaw. The children are Baylee Yates-Courtman, April Follen, Bronwyn Pottle, Jack Addison, George Holden, Erin Cook and Jamie-Lee Jary. MLNF-00059338May 2002: Staff at Diamond House Residential Home in Downham jumped to it – literally – in a £500 fundraiser in aid of the residents’ amenities fund. The target was to complete at least 100 skips in their sponsored skipping event and, skipping ropes at the ready, staff and friends prepare for their energetic fun event. MLNF-0205218May 2004: This shocking magenta pink Mohican hair cut raised around £500 for the East Anglian Air Ambulance – and raised quite a few eyebrows during May. Stuart Hallam, of George Street, Lynn, was brave enough to have his head shaved into the radical cut and in a bid to make the event more fun he let an assistant at Lynn’s Hocus Pocus shop choose the colour of the hair dye. In our picture, Linda Jaz, stylist and partner at Right Angles hairdressers in North Lynn, shows the finished product to the rather dazed fundraiser who held a party at the Bentinck pub. MLNF-04041560May 2004: Borough Mayor Michael Langwade (right) and Downham Mayor Steve Teverson add their cheques to the East Anglian Air Ambulance collecting tin, held by area co-ordinator Sue Cave. The two mayors donated a total of £3,500 to the service. Air Ambulance was Mr Langwade’s chosen charity for his year in office and he raised £2,500, with Mr Teverson adding the extra £1,000 raised in Downham. MLNF-0405214May 2004: Sunshine, smiles and balloons as walkers gather for the Downham Howdale Surgery sponsored walk at Denver – and the four-legged walkers had just as much fun as their owners and friends. The event raised around £2,200 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association, a cause close to the hearts of staff at the surgery. MLNF-0405291May 2004: Staff and customers of Blockbuster in Lynn helped raise a record of more than £400 for the company’s adopted charity the Starlight Foundation during a series of fundraising events. The manageress, Rebecca Dawson, was sponsored to go blonde and she is pictured here presenting a Finding Nemo cuddly toy to seven-year-old Elliot Otis, of South Wootton, who won a colouring competition.
