King's Lynn Memory Lane: Author Jeremy Strong opens new library at Gaywood's Howard Junior School in 2001

A new library containing £15,000 of books is opened at Gaywood’s Howard Junior School by children’s author Jeremy Strong in September 2001.

Staff, parents and teachers donated their time and expertise to construct the library in a former corridor over a period of 18 months.

The project was organised by learning support assistant Christopher Earl, who had computerised the library and trained pupils to be school librarians.

Mr Strong, author of There’s A Viking In My Bed, cut the ribbon at the entrance to the library – and another ribbon which had been tied round Mr Earl and a group of librarians.

That was the signal when the young librarians were set free to run their own library.
