Memory Lane: Back in time to a Victorian classroom

By Chris Hornby

The clock was turned back at South Wootton Junior School in April, 1989, when pupils had the chance to sample life in Victorian times.

Clad in near-authentic dress from the period, the nine to eleven-year-olds in the third and fourth years, discovered what it was like to spend a typical day at school from that bygone time.

Sitting on the floor in neat rows in the classroom they were given a geography lesson in which they chanted some old names of towns in Africa.

Skipping ropes, marbles and hoops were the order of the day at playtime.

Class teacher Mr Terry Castle explained that it was all part of a project the children were doing about life in Victorian times.
