King's Lynn Memory Lane: Brenda Carter retires from General Accident in 1991 plus Downham Market, Snettisham, Stow Bardolph, Sutton Bridge, Tapping House Hospice

Colleagues and friends said goodbye to a well-known Lynn figure in insurance when supervisor Mrs Brenda Carter retired from General Accident in August 1991, after 42 years of service.

As this picture shows she was showered with gifts and good wishes from fellow members of staff and close business friends. Mrs Carter began working as a teenager for the Road Transport General Insurance Company, which was later taken over by General Accident.

Office manager Mr John Burton said: “Brenda was very well-known to anyone connected with insurance in Lynn. She has an outward-going personality and was always happy to get involved and sort people’s problems out in the office or on the telephone.”

ALL OUR YESTERDAYS:

August 2000: Revenge, combined with water, resulted in about £1,000 being raised by Lynn firefighters when 13 members of Blue Watch built a special tank to dispense their own secret recipe slime. They took it along to Lynn town centre for the day and invited employees in the area to gunge their bosses. The event was in aid of Tapping House Hospice and the Quidenham Children’s Hospital near Norwich. Pictured here, Laura Reeve pulls the lever to give Sub Officer Paul Holmes a gunging to the amusement of his colleagues. MLNF-00081555A
