Marshland High School youngsters gave Billy Liar the chance to act out his ambition of winning an umpteenth Oscar in their version of the hit Keith Waterhouse play in March, 1980.

The school’s English and Drama teacher, Mrs Sue Perren, kept the storyline the same, but adapted the play to suit an expanded cast of sixty for the three performances. Roger Nelson played Billy, Gillian Fryer his mother, Gary Garwell his father and Trudy Taylor his grandmother.
