Downham Girls’ Venture Corps members went on manoeuvres to the Castle Hotel in the town in March, 1986, hoping to win their cooking and catering badges. They are pictured with the organiser, Mrs Eino Fleming.
The girls were initially shown around the kitchen by the Castle’s head chef, Geoff Wheelton, who then left them to it. A short time later dinner was served – and what a tasty spread it was. Hors d’oeuvre was egg empress, followed by steak chasseur with all the trimmings, finished off with sherry trifle and all washed down with vintage wine and fresh-ground coffee. The meal was then served up to parents, the mayor and mayoress, Mr and Mrs John Sperring, and officers from RAF Marham. Photo: MLNF 861614
