In the early part of 1986 a new home was being sought for Clackclose Playgroup which held five sessions a week in Oakview Drive, Downham. The playgroup, set up in 1972, met at the home of Mrs Joyce Day, but her house was up for sale.

The secretary, Karen Jakes, told the Lynn News it was hoped the group would get involved in a pilot scheme to be set up in Downham to co-ordinate facilities for the under-fives. There were 32 children in the group, with morning and afternoon sessions on Mondays and Thursdays, and each Friday morning. It had recently become part of the Pre-School Playgroups Association.
