A special piece of Memory Lane nostalgia from 40 years ago when a 200-strong crowd waiting at Flitcham Church to see the Queen and Queen Mother arrive for a new year Sunday service in January 1982.

This had a right royal surprise when the Prince and Princess of Wales arrived unexpectedly – especially as the royal couple had already announced their first child was due in the summer [Prince William was born on June 21].

Princess Diana was presented with a bunch of pink carnations by a young admirer as she left the church after the service.
