Memory Lane: Retirement on the menu for cook at Walpole

Walpole Highway Primary School children say farewell to their popular cook, Mrs May Horspole, on her retirement in October, 1981.
She was presented with a series of gifts to mark her departure after cooking many thousands of meals for pupils of the village’s primary school over 33 years.
Mrs Horspole, who had been a pupil at the school herself, started working at the school to help a friend with cleaning and scrubbing the classrooms.
Then she was asked to help in the kitchen, initially for a few weeks. Over the years she worked under eight headteachers.
A special retirement card made by infant teacher Mrs C Milton depicted a typical school meal.
