Memory Lane: students tune up for Smithdon concert

By Chris Hornby

An audience of about 100 supported a one-hour instrumental, orchestral and vocal concert by pupils of Smithdon High School, in April, 1993.

It was arranged by the school’s head of music, Mr Robert Mayhew, who is pictured rehearsing members of the orchestra.

He explained that the aim was to raise money for new instruments and the concert had boosted funds by £109.

Eventually he hoped to be able to buy an oboe for the orchestra, but there was still some way to go to find the £600 or so that would be needed.

Concerts were held regularly at the school, with the programmes becoming more advanced as the students became more experienced.
