Picture This: Lynn Museum shares photo of old King’s Lynn cattle market

Lynn Museum shares a picture of an old cattle market in town…

Lynn residents might not recognise this picture, despite it being a place many of us walk through every day. The Old Cattle Market, now the site of the bus station and Sainsbury’s supermarket, is seen here in around 1900.

Sheep are tightly packed into pens with walkways between them allowing prospective buyers to peruse the stock. Many of those in this black and white photo appear smartly dressed in bowler hats and long coats.

The Cattle Market continued to operate on this site until 1971 when it made way for the bus station, which this spring is undergoing its own redevelopment.

Lynn Museum is situated on the bus station concourse, in the Union Baptist Chapel and remains open during the bus station building work.

The museum is free to visit until the end of March.
