William Shakespeare, King's Lynn St George’s Guildhall on King Street and artist Henry Baines – Picture This

This is a drawing of “St George’s Hall” on King Street by local artist Henry Baines.

The St George’s Guildhall has a long association with the theatre. The earliest recorded theatrical performance was in 1445 making it the oldest working theatre in the UK.

In 1593, when London’s theatres were closed due to an outbreak of the plague, William Shakespeare’s acting company came to King’s Lynn and performed.

Shakespeare himself may have been with them.

Visit the St George’s Guildhall on Saturday, April 22 and Sunday 23, noon-4pm and celebrate Shakespeare’s birthday at a free event.

There will be film screenings of “Bill” and “Gnomeo and Juliet” along with a family trail, craft activities, story-telling and Tudor games.
