The Royal Mint celebrates Winnie the Pooh and Friends with new official UK 50p coin featuring all of AA Milne's characters

A new 50p coin, inspired by Disney's Winnie the Pooh, has been unveiled by The Royal Mint with one rare collectable piece costing more than £1,000.

The latest issue 50p design features a group shot of the characters – marking 95 years since the treasured bear created by AA Milne first began his adventures.

The design of the coin, featuring Pooh, Piglet, Owl, Eeyore, Rabbit, Tigger, Kanga and Roo is inspired by EH Shepard's original artwork and taken from the pages of the classic tales first published in 1926.

Available to buy in gold, silver, brilliant uncirculated and a special-edition coloured coin – prices to purchase the Winnie the Pooh and Friends range start from just £10.

But there is one 50p coin in the collection, which will set avid collectors back more than £1,000. It is the gold proof 50p with a current RRP of £1,065.

Clare Maclennan, The Royal Mint’s divisional director of commemorative coin, said: “Winnie-the-Pooh is a treasured children’s classic which, much like the popular hobby of coin collecting, has been passed down through generations.

"As we celebrate 95 years of Winnie the Pooh, the latest design featuring Pooh and friends is a fitting tribute to the much-loved adventures.

“Fans of Winnie the Pooh can enjoy the coins individually, or as part of the nine-coin collection released over three years. We are buzzing with excitement to bring these wonderful characters and memories to life on a collectable 50p coin series.”

Among the first three coins already released is one featuring Christopher Robin and others of Pooh and Piglet while 50p coins featuring Owl and Tigger will be released later this year. Further releases of the collection will take place in 2022.

As well as being able to buy the current collectable coins from The Royal Mint website, is also the option to pre-order future coins from the collection not yet released, to ensure avid fans can secure the entire nine-coin set before it sells out.

Daniel Thorne, The Royal Mint’s product designer for the Winnie the Pooh coins, said: “Using inspiration from the original decorations of EH Shepard has been a fantastic experience but one that has also tested me as a designer.

"With each design, so much care and attention has been given to remastering the iconic decorations for the canvas of a coin while staying true to the texts people know and love.

“I also wanted to add something extra special for collectors, with the bee motif. Inspired by the original decorations the buzzy bee from the storybooks features on each of the nine coins in the collection.

"I hope collectors can appreciate the beauty in each design in the range and enjoy the special colour editions.”
