School’s Out for Summer, sang Alice Cooper in 1972, but at Smithdon High School in September 2000 around 100 children were queuing up for a free summer school.

The event co-ordinator, Glyn Hambling, was delighted with the response and said it had been a fantastic opportunity for the children to prepare themselves for the big step up to secondary education.

This group of children are pictured at the expressive arts lesson – and singing songs about Buddy Holly.
