All Our Yesterdays: Taking a look back at May good causes in King’s Lynn, Wiggenhall St Germans, Terrington St John and Burnham Market
In our weekly look through back issues of the Lynn News, we revisit 2012 and 2014 for our All Our Yesterdays feature…
May 2012: A community coffee bar was set up on the ground floor of West Norfolk Council offices in Lynn by West Norfolk Voluntary and Community Action (WNVCA). May 2012: Family and friends donned their craziest hats for a Mad Hatters Tea Party organised by breast cancer patient Julie Rowe (front), of Reffley, Lynn, which raised £325 for Macmillan Cancer Support. The local Macmillan chairman, Howard Moore, is at the centre back.
May 2012: Sally Chenery of The Tile Shop at St Germans raised more than £700 for the Multiple Sclerosis Society when she took part in Cake Break 2012. Over a period of eight weeks she made around 130 cakes.
May 2012: Shoppers at South Wootton Asda store raised £666 for Help for Heroes, when supporting Lisa-Marie and husband double amputee Steve Arnold. Lisa was planning a fundraising trek in Jordan and Steve a 3,000-miler hand cycle across America. They are joined by Steve’s mum Pam Arnold (right) and aunt Wendy Askew.
May 2012: Sponsored walkers from Briar House in North Lynn receive a send-off from staff and patients before taking part in a sponsored walk to Sandringham to highlight Dementia Week.
May 2012: It’s ready, teddy go for the Lynn News’ Young Carers Appeal, thanks to Rebecca Daisey and Jackie Haverson who raised £50 from their stall at Lynn’s Tuesday Market Place, selling teddy bears, books and videos.
May 2014: Heacham biker Chris Harris was preparing for a 7,000-mile ride through Scandinavia and into the Arctic Circle, joined by three other enthusiasts, raising funds for Macmillan Cancer Care in memory of his parents.
May 2014: Terrington St John dad Philip Dennis was making final preparations for his fundraising Vale of Belvoir bike ride, in aid of the British Heart Foundation, inspired by his five-year-old son Theo’s battle against a heart condition.
May 2014: Thanks to the brilliant efforts of scores of hardworking fundraisers, the Lynn News Help Our Hospice Appeal had reached an amazing £10,500. And more money was to come from these runners taking part in the Grand East Anglia Run in support of the appeal.
May 2014: A fashion show organised by the Phoenix Ladies Meeting Group at Burnham Market raised an estimated £400 for the Norfolk Hospice Tapping House. From left are Liz Rogers, Suzanne Hanley (the organiser) and Jill Francis.
