Syderstone was in mourning when villagers heard news that one of their own had been killed in action in the Falklands.

Major Mike Forge, 40, lived in the village with his widowed mother and was a well-known local figure whenever he returned home on leave.

His death, with three others when their Gazelle helicopter was shot down on Sunday, June 6, saddened the local residents – and came just a few days before the end of the conflict.
