Up to £14 million will be spent this year on improvements to Lynn’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

The Gayton Road site is currently without one surgical theatre and another is coming towards the end of its life.

Plus the hospital’s roof is in need of refurbishment.

A midwife-led maternity unit is being created later in the year and following this the home birth service will be reviewed.

Chief executive Dorothy Hosein said financing capital projects is going to be challenging.

She said: “What we have got to do is make sure we make as many savings as we can to ensure we are top of things.”

Mrs Hosein also says that the A&E department is also being looked at.

She said: “The commissioners and the hospital trust are looking at the redesign of the front door of the A&E department.

“The trust is working with commissioners on a new model for care and A&E department.”

Staffing at the A&E department has also been examined with the introduction of two new consultants in May. The removal of special measures is hoped to help with recruitment.
