Oliver Clarke caught drink-driving after celebrating girlfriend’s birthday in Downham Market

A 22-year-old was caught drink-driving after an evening spent celebrating his girlfriend’s birthday.

Oliver Clarke, of Daisy Lane in Downham, pleaded guilty to the offence when he appeared at Lynn Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

He was pulled over by the police on Bridge Street in his hometown shortly before midnight on January 4, with officers having been tipped off about his actions.

Clarke failed a roadside breath test, and an evidential sample showed he had 54mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath. The legal limit to drive is 35mcg.

In mitigation, duty solicitor George Sorrell said that Clarke - who works as a mechanic and was of previous good character - is likely to lose his job as a result of his conviction.

“The reason he had been out for a few drinks was because it was his girlfriend’s birthday,” Mr Sorrell added.

“His main interests in life are motor sports. I have impressed upon him that in light of his disqualification, he is not to use a vehicle in any public place.”

Magistrates banned Clarke from driving for 14 months, but offered him a drink-driving rehabilitation course which, if completed, will reduce that term by 14 weeks.

He will also pay a £184 fine, £74 victim surcharge and £85 in court costs.
