Review of The Foldgate Inn in Stradsett: A cosy village pub with tasty, well-presented food and friendly staff
After driving past The Foldgate Inn at Stradsett on many occasions and never really taking much notice, I decided to change that and give it a go – and I feel I made a pretty good choice.
With that in mind, I took both my mum and my dad last Saturday evening at 5.30pm.
When we arrived, the pub had only just opened so we were the first people there. We were greeted by a very friendly waiter and were shown straight to our table.
The inside of the pub felt very spacious and relaxed – and gave a barn-type feel with the wooden beams inside and the nice interior throughout.
When the waiter took our drink orders, all three of us opted for a coke (£2.50), but there was a good range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages to choose from.
We then looked at the menu, which had a good array of options to choose from, including mains, gluten-free options, starters, small meals, sides, and children's menu – as well as desserts.
My dad went for the beer-battered cod which came with hand-cut chips, garden peas, salad garnish, and a wedge of lemon for £16.25.
My mum chose the mushroom stroganoff, which was served with rice and garlic bread for £13.75 and added on a side of hand-cut chips for £3.25.
I decided to go for the hunter's chicken, which was served with hand-cut chips, salad garnish, and slaw for £16.50.
Our food came out pretty quickly, was well-presented, and looked very appealing – and while we were waiting a couple more tables were filled.
My dad very much enjoyed his dish and thought the chips tasted handmade and fresh, while the fish was not oily and was nice and crispy.
My mum thought her stroganoff was delicious and very creamy. She was chuffed when the food came out piping hot.
She said: “A lot of places you go to, the food comes out just warm – but this food is piping hot, which I really like.”
I really enjoyed my hunter's chicken and it was a good sized portion. The chicken was not dry at all and was smothered in cheese and barbecue sauce, which I loved.
When we all finished our mains, we were all stuffed so decided against a dessert, but there were some good options on the menu.
Overall, all three of us very much enjoyed our visit to The Foldgate Inn and thought our meals were delicious – but we did think the meals were slightly overpriced, especially the fish and chips.
The Foldgate Inn is located on Downham Road in Stradsett and is open Wednesday and Thursday from noon-3pm and then 5pm-9pm, Friday and Saturday from noon-3pm and 5pm-9.30pm and Sundays noon-7pm.
