Morton's Barbers and Men's Rooms opens new premises in Downham Market

A family-run barbers' shop is bringing a whole new experience to town now it has relocated to different premises in Downham.

The doors to Morton’s Barbers & Men’s Rooms opened in Bridge Street on Saturday, just further along the road from where the had originally been based.

Now the barbers is set to become a hub for the community as it incorporates new features such as a coffee bar, tanning studio, tattooist services and live music in the future.

Said Lesa Morton, co-owner of the business: "After 17 years of serving Downham and surrounding villages we thought it was time to offer something new for our area.

"Visiting a barbers' shop in the north, such as in places like Sheffield and Manchester, is about so much more than getting a trim. It’s an experience and that’s what we wanted to create for the gentlemen of Norfolk."

Saturday's launch featured a resident DJ and there are plans for this style of entertainment to be a regular event on the first Saturday of the month, with the next one on October 3.

"Music is a great ingredient to the feel of a place and with that in mind we will be holding acoustic sessions where local musicians can share their music," said Lesa, who is keen to hear from anyone interested in playing a set.

Lynn's Tropic Coffee supplies the coffee bar, which is open to everyone who wants to visit.

Also the tanning room, which contains the latest stand-up technology, is available to everyone – not just men.

Said Lesa: "Our tattoo studio opens next month and will be used by tattoo artists all over the UK. Many tattooists now travel around different areas to broaden their clientele. We love this concept as it allows local people to use different styled tattooists.

"The whole thought process has been about creating a place where different craftsmen and artists, who share a mutual interest and are like-minded, can collaborate. The energy at No.33 on our opening day was exactly what we hoped to create.

"One customer commented that the place had soul! We would emphasise our barbers shop is a place people can call in, not just to get a trim but also for a chat. Mental health in men is sometimes forgotten. We will be collaborating with suppliers to highlight and recognise that more can be done to support men who are experiencing these kind of problems.

"Our shop is a place for everyone young, old and all in between and we can assure the warmest welcome and the best coffee around!"
