A splash of success at raft race in Hilgay

A popular charity event made a splash when it returned to a West Norfolk village last weekend.

Hilgay Raft Race, which is organised by Downham Market Rotary Club and local butcher Ali Dent, was held on the River Wissey on Sunday.

Competitors had to paddle down the river in their home-made rafts, before one team member jumped out to squeeze themselves through a hanging tyre swing, and then turn around to race back up the waters.

This year, the Neon Tigers claimed first place, Fen Boyz came in at second, Barney Binmen third, and the Bootleggers took home fourth place.

Having raised £2,000 for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospice (EACH), Hilgay Raft Race organisers said the event was “an excellent day and everyone was very enthusiastic”.

Member of Downham Market Rotary Club, Howard Phillips said: “It was a cracking day, great fun. We had more rafts than we were expecting, around 12.

“It broke out into chaos if more than one raft arrived at the tyre swing at the same time. Loads of people ended up taking a dip, landing up in the water.”

Mr Dent said: “It was an excellent day and everyone was very enthusiastic. We were donated bags of flour and started throwing this at the rafters.

“Wally Webb from BBC Radio Norfolk also gave a great commentary of the race. We are pleased to have raised so much money for charity.”
