Downham Market’s Nelson Academy pupils experienced Indian culture as they visited Downham Tandoori
An Indian restaurant showcased a bit of culture to school kids in the area.
Downham Tandoori had a visit from children in Year Three at Nelson Academy for an India Day at the restaurant on Monday.
As part of the day, the restaurant had two musicians - Yousuf Ali Kahn, who played the Tabla, and Johnathan Mayer, who played the Sitar - as well as Senjuti Sen, who performed some Indian dances and taught the children a story about the Indian King and Queen through dance.
The kids got to taste some Indian food such as samosas, biryani, and bhajis - and there were chicken nuggets too for those who weren’t too keen.
After trying the food, the children got to participate in some Indian-style dancing.
Anwar Ali, owner of the tandoori, said: “It was such an amazing day - I just loved it, and the kids loved it.
“It means a lot as I love kids and I love culture, and love to show the beautiful things I love. I like to share it.”
Jess Sykes, a teacher who went on the trip, said: “I contacted Anwar to see if we could visit and learn a little about the Indian culture. He organised this fantastic afternoon.
“The atmosphere was amazing, both children and staff had a great time and learned so much. We were also treated to some lovely Indian food.
“Since the trip, the children have been writing about their experience at the Tandoori and we plan to send this to Anwar and his staff as a thank you.
“We are so grateful to Anwar for generously allowing the children to have this fantastic experience, it will be remembered for a long time.”
