Review of Oriental Palace, West Winch: All you can eat Chinese buffet offers variety of dishes
I'm a big Chinese takeaway fan, so after hearing good things about Oriental Palace at West Winch, I knew I wanted to go try it out for myself.
I have driven past the building on the A10 many times and I have always said I wanted to go, so I thought why not take the chance to finally do so.
My partner Brandon and I had a booking for 6pm on a Sunday. When we entered we were greeted just inside the door and we were shown to our table. It wasn't busy at all when we arrived but it got steadily busier throughout our visit.
The interior in my opinion could have done with a bit of a spruce up, but it was a calm atmosphere and wasn't so loud that you couldn't hear across the table.
On our table was a bowl of complimentary prawn crackers, which was a lovely little welcoming.
As soon as we sat down, we were asked straight away what we wanted to drink - we would have appreciated some more time to think but we both just got cokes (£3.50 each) which we thought was a little on the pricey side.
For our food it was £23 each for all you can eat and any leftover dishes are charged at full price, so we just picked dishes to share between us both.
We chose smoked shredded chicken, seaweed and crispy duck from the starter section, of which there were a wide range of starters and soup to choose from.
When it came out to us, the food was served on separate dishes and was of good sized portions.
We enjoyed the dishes, which were tasty and full of flavour.
After looking at the wide range of food on offer on the main menu, we felt like there could have been some more details and nothing really took our fancy, so we reordered the seaweed, smoked shredded chicken and crispy duck again as we knew we liked that.
After finishing the second round we were quite full up as the portions were fairly big.
Overall we enjoyed the food we had, but both Brandon and I felt the tables were too close together.
It also felt as though we were being watched while we ate, although the staff were friendly.
While we did enjoy it, we would not rush back again.
Oriental Palace is open Tuesday 5pm-10.30pm, Wednesday to Sunday noon-2pm and 5pm-10.30pm, Mondays closed. There is takeaway service, à la carte menu, all you can eat menu and vegetarian meals.
Ratings out of five:
Food: The food we had was very tasty, but we felt there could have been more details on the main menu. ***
Drink: We just both had a glass of coke with lemon slice and ice. ***
Decor: The interior felt dated and that it could have a bit of a spruce up, but was clean and featured some authentic artwork. ***
Staff: The staff were friendly but we felt rushed and as though we were being watched. ***
Price: A total of £53 for two 'all you can eat' and two drinks represents good value for money if you eat enough. ****
