'Amazing' brothers walk for 32 hours from Essex to West Norfolk in sister's memory

Two brothers walked non-stop for more than 30 hours from Essex to West Norfolk at the weekend in memory of their younger sister.

Barry and Lee Edwards have raised around £5,000 for the Epilepsy Society through their 95-mile walk, which took place just over a year after their sister Hannah, 33, died following an epileptic seizure.

The brothers left Canvey Island in Essex, where the family grew up, at 8am on Friday and arrived in Downham, where Hannah lived, at 4pm on Saturday.

Their mum Michele Edwards said: "They were obviously exhausted with the sleep deprivation because they didn't stop for 32 hours.

"They had blisters and all their joints ached, but they did it.

"Lots of us stopped on the way because we saw them off and we all came back at different times to make sure they had food and drinks and socks, things like that."

Barry and Lee were joined by 17 members of family and friends when they reached Stoke Ferry on Saturday – where their parents Michele and Duncan live – for the last seven miles to Downham.

Michele added: "I just think they are amazing, strong-willed boys. We are really proud of them, there's not enough words to say how proud we are."

A cake stall and tombola Michele held in Downham also boosted funds on Saturday, raising £205.

"We just want to say a big thank you to everybody for their efforts and the money that's been raised," she added.

The final fundraising total will soon be known, but it is believed to be somewhere in the region of £5,000 – far surpassing their original target of £1,000.

Michele said: "The boys are coming up as it would have been Hannah's birthday on Friday and she was a member of Denver Golf Club, so we are going there and we will be picking up the sponsor forms from there, as well as AT Johnson and Reeds."

Next year, they are hoping to organise "something less stressful" in Hannah's memory, with the idea of a charity ball being floated.
