Old Hunstanton Schoolreaders' ambassador encourages volunteers to help school children with reading

A Norfolk county ambassador for a charity which helps youngsters with reading in schools is encouraging the need for volunteers to get involved.

Penny Hubbard, from Old Hunstanton is, herself, a volunteer for a charity called Schoolreaders.

The organisation sends volunteer readers into primary schools to read one on one with children.

Penny said: “Even before the pandemic one in four primary school children were leaving school without having reached the required level of reading.

“ Since Covid, the attainment gap has widened dramatically and the need is even greater.”

The service is free to the schools as the charity is funded by philanthropy and one in seven primary schools across the country have signed up with Schoolreaders and are reading one on one with circa 14,000 children each week.

Penny continued: “My role is to spread the word in Norfolk as we have a large number of primary schools who have signed up with Schoolreaders and who are looking for volunteers.

“We are making inroads which is wonderful but we still need at least 50 to 60 volunteers across Norfolk.

“ It would be wonderful to encourage volunteers to apply.

“I would hope this worthy cause and ability for people to get involved and make a direct impact on the lives of local children would really appeal.”
