Breckland District Council - which covers Swaffham - supports veterans with special armed forces brunch

A council hosted a community brunch for armed forces veterans.

Breckland District Council - which covers Swaffham - put on the event with an aim of bringing the veterans together.

The event took place on June 27 to bring together veterans at Dereham football club, which provided the opportunity for them to share memories about their time in service.

Councillor Paul Claussen attended the brunch. He said: “The day was just one instance of the council showing their gratitude to those who have served, and to reassure them that they are valued, respected and not alone”.

Armed Forces week was commemorated from June 22 to 28, which Breckland used to raise awareness of challenges faced by veterans, such as mental health issues and isolation.

Breckland also launched several other fundraising efforts last week.

The council worked with coffee roaster company Combat2Coffee and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, an organisation that works to maintain the graves of military service personnel who died in the First and Second World Wars.
