West Norfolk author Andrew Bickerton visits Great Massingham and Harpley primary schools for World Book Day

A West Norfolk author has paid a number of visits to treat youngsters to the first readings of his new books.

Andrew Bickerton, a former teacher, recently published the children’s books ‘Incy Wincy: Who Never Gives Up’, ‘Quackers: The true story of a Dabbling Duck’, and ‘Rookie: The true story of a boy and his pet rook’.

He made trips to two schools last week to mark World Book Day, reading extracts to pupils at Great Massingham Primary School and Harpley CofE Primary School to celebrate the occasion.

While at the Great Massingham school, Andrew, 79, linked the ‘Quackers’ book to the nearby Dabbling Duck pub.

Meanwhile, ‘Rookie’ is based on a pet rook he had as a child. He had attempted to shoot it three times, but it just kept on flying.

After his mother later found it injured, Andrew decided to keep it – and it made a “wonderful pet”.

Youngsters at the two schools thoroughly enjoyed the readings from Andrew, who used to work at the Gaywood Park school and was head of English at St Clement’s High School.

“It went very well,” he said.

Then, on Saturday, Andrew officially launched his new books at an event in Great Massingham Village Hall.

A “good social event” saw visitors enjoy a peek at the books, while they were also treated to some tasty home baking courtesy of Andrew’s wife Rosemary.

The author has also written and directed numerous theatre productions, and is passionate about biodiversity and the environment.

All of his published books so far focus on nature and aim to raise awareness of the roles played by the commonplace things and creatures around us.

They include ‘Wilfred: the worm who would not wriggle’ and ‘Bumble!’, which tells the story of a bumblebee’s struggle to provide pollen and nectar for her family.
