New autism support service launches in Norfolk to aid adults awaiting assessment
A pioneering new autism support service has launched in Norfolk, providing vital help to adults waiting for a formal autism assessment.
Commissioned by the Norfolk and Waveney Integrated Care Board (ICB), the service is the first of its kind in East Anglia and was co-designed with people with lived experience through the Norfolk Autism Partnership Board.
It officially began in early June and aims to ease the waiting period many face before assessment.
The pre-assessment service, delivered by ABL Health, offers tailored support to help individuals “build resilience, understand their strengths and challenges”, and connect with Peer Support Workers who have firsthand experience.
Tricia D’Orsi, executive director of nursing at Norfolk and Waveney ICB, said: “This innovative programme represents a major step forward.
"By offering meaningful support throughout a person’s journey, we aim to improve the lives of people awaiting an autism assessment.”
Those referred will also receive confirmation of reasonable adjustments organisations should make to better support them in daily life.
“This service doesn’t replace assessment, but it makes a real difference,” said Lee Gibbons, Norfolk Autism Partnership Board facilitator.
“It helps people manage day-to-day challenges and better understand their needs.”
The programme was developed in partnership with Norfolk County Council.
Cllr Alison Thomas, cabinet member for adult social services, said autistic voices were central to shaping the initiative.
New patients can access the service via GP referral, while those already on the waiting list will be contacted directly.
