Backing for new Swaffham homes plan
Proposals for up to 20 new homes on the edge of Swaffham could get the go-ahead, despite the site being outside established development limits.
District councillors are due to consider the outline scheme for land at 12 Norwich Road at a planning meeting on Monday.
But officials say the district’s lack of adequate land stocks means the scheme should be given the go-ahead.
A report published ahead of the planning committee meeting, which will take place in Dereham, said: “The Council does not currently have a five year land supply as required and this development would provide a contribution towards Breckland’s housing supply.
“On this basis, the other key principle considerations for this proposal must be assessed and are whether the site is a sustainable location for housing and the visual impact on the countryside.
“The site is within walking distance of services and facilities and is considered to be in a sustainable location and not to have a detrimental impact on the countryside.”
Town councillors have objected to the scheme, arguing that the site should be retained for industrial use as there is a lack of suitable land for such purposes.
But the report also points out that plans for 165 homes on an adjacent site were given the go-ahead last month.
