Students at Docking Primary School can now enjoy classes outside thanks to a £10,000 grant from Tesco’s Bags of Help campaign.
Earlier in the month, a hexagonal gazebo with seating for a whole class was completed in an area of the playground which was previously unused.
Tesco teamed up with Groundwork – an environmental organisation – to launch the initiative which allowed grants raised from the 5p bag levy to be awarded to environmental and green space projects. Now every class had had an afternoon tea part in the gazebo.
A spokeswoman for the school said that the students enjoy being outdoors – one pupil said: “I like reading in the fresh air – it helps me concentrate.”
Docking Primary School is now hoping to raise a further £3,000 to develop the project further.
Caroline Silke, Tesco’s Head of Community, said: “It is wonderful to see how the money from our Bags of Help initiative has been spent.
“This money has come directly from Tesco customers living and shopping in each of our regions up and down the country.”
