Sutton Bridge marina could be given an kick start with £100,000 Lincolnshire County Council project
A £100,000 art and infrastructure project aims to help to ‘kick start’ the fortunes of Sutton Bridge marina.
Lincolnshire County Council is looking to improve pedestrian access to the floating pontoons installed in the River Nene on the outskirts of Sutton Bridge.
A community arts project, which could include bespoke features, is also part of the Sutton Bridge Place Making Scheme - which will be considered by the council next week.
County councillor Jack Tyrrell, who attended the first meetings on the scheme with district colleague Michael Booth, hopes this could help the village gain Levelling Up funding.
He said: “It is a good start for us. I think the marina does need a lift and help pedestrians to go into town and use the shops.
“If people in Sutton Bridge work together I think it will be a good start.
“It is just a start to get people to use the marina and the bank. It is a kick start to get things going again.”
The marina, which caters for 20 boats, was officially opened in 2017 following a four year project by the county council and Fenland District Council.
It has recently had a 35m extension thanks to £679,000 which was awarded to the Sail The Wash project by the Coastal Communities Fund.
The county’s Environment and Economy Scrutiny Committee will be considering the new scheme during a meeting on Tuesday.
Plans include improving the pedestrian route from the moorings to the village with new steps, a ramp and dropped kerbs.
Transported Arts will also be supporting a community art project which will include street furniture, artworks and bespoke features.
Local schools and community groups could be involved in the first stage of the art project.
The report states: “This project would deliver much needed improvements in a Lincolnshire village that is at the gateway to the county, enhancing the area for local businesses and services, visitors and residents.”
Coun Tyrell is hoping to eventually see markets on the river bank to be a draw to the area. He would also like improved facilities for boaters to encourage them to come.
