The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is investigating the death of a former Lynn man in a Newcastle police station, it has emerged today.
Mark Needham died in the city’s Forth Hills police station on July 23, hours after he was arrested on suspicion of a public order offence.
Northumbria Police referred the case to the IPCC, who have determined it should be the subject of an independent investigation.
According to a letter from the commission, which the Lynn News has seen, Mr Needham, who is believed to have been homeless at the time of his death, had travelled to the Newcastle area in June this year.
Prior to that, he had spent two and a half years living in the Lynn area.
During that period, he was supported by staff at the Purfleet Trust.
Officials there have confirmed they have been contacted by the IPCC as part of their investigation.
A spokesman said it had been “an upsetting time” for staff and clients.
