One of the newly-elected Brexit Party MEPs has thanked West Norfolk voters for the strong support given at the ballot box last week.

The newly-formed party took 47 per cent of the votes in the election for the European Parliament.

More than 17,000 voters backed the party in West Norfolk headed by former UKIP leader Nigel Farage.

Michael Heaver will be one of the three Brexit Party representatives for the East of England, alongside two pro-Remain LibDems, a Green and a Conservative.

Mr Heaver contacted the Lynn News to say: "Well after an EU Election that should never have even been necessary, the verdict is clear: the people still demand that we leave the European Union.

"It is quite ridiculous that after promising more than a hundred times that the UK would leave on March 29, 2019, Theresa May instead led the country into contesting another Euro Election.

"But given that it was taking place, we in the Brexit Party vowed to stand up for the pro-Leave majority who have been ignored for far too long.

"The support in this part of the world was truly phenomenal. In Fenland, a majority of voters backed the Brexit Party whilst in King’s Lynn and West Norfolk more than 47 per cent of voters went out and supported us.

"As a result three Brexit Party MEPs, including myself, were elected to represent the East of England. So thank you.

"In return I promise you that myself and my Brexit Party colleagues will now work tirelessly to ensure a clean break Brexit is delivered. That means this country taking back control of our borders, laws and money whilst refusing to be stitched-up by a grubby £39 billion EU deal. For us, No Deal will always be better than a bad deal.

"We’ll also be demanding a significant role in the negotiations with those in Brussels. Let’s face it, those who have wasted years in the job so far have comprehensively failed to deliver.

"The Brexit Party isn’t going away. We’ll be selecting candidates for the next General Election and are doing all we can to elect the first Brexit MP in the Peterborough by-election."
