With help from a course to help people set up their own businesses, Anna Sylvester, from Walpole Cross Keys, has established a thriving enterprise.

She launched her pet sitting and dog walking service, called Sylvester Sits, covering the Terringtons, Tilneys and Walpoles a year ago and also helps people out when they are away from their homes by making their houses looked lived in.

Now a new round of courses are about to begin in Lynn for people thinking about starting up on their own designed to offer expert guidance.

Anna had been thinking for some time about starting her own business and saw a leaflet in the local library about business start-up courses run by TCHC (The Consultancy Home Counties Ltd). The courses run regularly in West Norfolk and are funded by the West Norfolk Council and Norfolk County Council.

Anna went to a “Building Your Own Business Idea” course, which gave her the confidence and support to make the leap into being her own boss.

She has always loved helping people, has worked in the voluntary sector and continues to do so part time. She also likes to spend time with animals, so she decided to set up a pet sitting service.

“It was really useful to meet other people who were starting out in self-employment and to hear what they were planning. The course helped me to have a good overview of the issues I needed to be aware of, such as tax and successful marketing, as well as de-mystify business languages such as cash flow and profit and loss.”

At one stage Anna had some concerns about starting out, but a mentoring session with a TCHC business adviser gave her the confidence to continue to pursue her dream.

She said: “I have met some lovely people over the past year that I’ve been trading and of course their pets. As an added bonus I have got very fit in the last year.” For more details visit her website, email or call her on 07796477602.

The next course, Building Your Business Idea, is due to start in Lynn at Your Business Networks, Bishops Lynn House, on Monday, November 17, from 9.30am to 5pm. This will be followed by a Business Planning session at the same venue, on Monday, December 8, 9.30am to 5pm. One-to-one advice and mentoring will be ongoing.
