After spotting a gap in the market two men have set up a new business at Hardwick Narrows Industrial Estate which is due to create new jobs.

Tom Gilham and Adam English have just opened Tuff Coat Ltd which specialises in powder coating, a form of painting which has become increasingly popular due to its environmental advantages.

Tom is a engineer and fabricator while Adam is a tree surgeon. Both of them have a history of steelwork and enthusiasm for motorcycles which helped them identify the need for a quality powder coating business based in Lynn. Together they have built an extensive oven for curing and a water wall extractor system.

Said Adam: “Tuff Coat has now trialled an array of finishes, colours and items through the processing. Although we are newly opened we are witnessing a lot of interest with inquiries from commercial and domestic markets, ranging from outdoor furniture to the motor industry.

“We hope interest continues so that people don’t have to leave the area for quality powder coating which will in turn lead to employment opportunities in Lynn.”

Powder coating is a form of painting. It is applied with a spray gun which adds an electrostatic charge to the powder paint particles which are then sprayed onto the negatively charged part being coated.

Once the part is coated in powder, it cured in an oven capable of reaching temperatures of 250C.

Unlike liquid finished, powder coating does not contain any solvents and releases minimal, if any, pollutants into the atmosphere. It is a lot more duable and resistant than other finishes due to its molecular structure.

It also does not run, drip or sag. The choice of colours and finishes available are nearly limitless, said Adam.

The technique is widely used and can be seen on all kinds of items such as white goods, car wheels and garden furniture.

Tuff Coat offers its powder coating services with blasting and zinc application by working in conjunction with SS Blasting, of Gooderstone.

To mark the opening of Tuff Coat, which is based at Unit 4, Hereford Way, the business has launched a competition offering a prize for the chance to win a set of alloys to be powder coated. Details can be found via Facebook, by searching for tuff coat ltd.
