A local employment specialist has helped to turn life around for a sufferer of Asperger syndrome who has just got his first permanent job in Lynn.

Alex Preece has just joined the Colonel’s ranks at KFC in Lynn.

The 21 year-old from Lynn had a varied range of temporary work experience to offer, but had been unemployed for more than a year.

With support from local employment specialist Ingeus, Alex is now a lobby assistant at the busy restaurant, offering a friendly welcome and clean eating area for hundreds of hungry diners each day.

“The customers appreciate a smile and I’m always happy to be at work,” said Alex. “It was very demotivating being unemployed for so long, really trying to find work but getting nowhere. I didn’t have the experience employers were looking for and just needed to be given a chance.”

Ingeus worked with Alex to update his CV and speculative letters to employers. He used the Ingeus branch facilities in Lynn to job search and make phone calls and was motivated all the way by his Ingeus employment advisor. When he took his CV into the local branch of KFC, Ingeus’s employer partnership coordinator Paul Hunt also discussed appropriate support for Alex with restaurant manager Carrie Key.

“Having Asperger syndrome means I sometimes see things a little differently and can struggle to understand certain things,” said Alex. “Ingeus was very hands-on, helping me in lots of practical ways with my job search. They actually helped me to find two jobs so I was in the enviable position of choosing one. KFC has given me the chance I needed and helped me turn my life around.”

Carrie said: “Alex fitted in really well, he’s methodical and takes pride in his work, which is just what we need.”

“Ingeus was able to give me an insight to Alex that I wouldn’t have seen just from his CV and having them on hand for support is invaluable.”

Ingeus is a leading provider of the government’s Work Programme which supports clients to gain the skills and confidence they need to find and retain work. It has offices across the East of England and offers a free of charge recruitment service to employers looking to recruit motivated, work-ready jobseekers.
