A man with a degenerative condition is calling for better disabled friendly housing to be built in Lynn.

Adrian Reynolds says he will end up in a wheelchair after being diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy two years ago.

Mr Reynolds is currently living in his mother’s cottage in Middleton but says it is unsuitable as he cannot make it up the stairs without help and is sleeping in a chair.

Peripheral neuropathy affects one in 50 people and relates to nerve damage.

He is keen to move into Lynn, where he has the offer of work, but is unable to move and is calling on Freebridge Community Housing to provide more suitable accommodation.

Mr Reynolds, who has been classed as a medium priority on the housing list, says the association’s new Keeble Court development will not allow disabled people to live independently.

Mr Reynolds, who is also unhappy that people classed as a low priority have moved into the flats, said: “The flagship property from the biggest community housing association is woefully lacking.

“The disabled access is brilliant but when you go into the apartment not one has a level entry shower or wet room. It has a shower over the bath.

“I am not in a wheelchair but I will be.

“You want to bathe privately on your own but disabled people can’t do that with a shower over the bath.”

Chief executive Tony Hall said Freebridge is committed to developing homes for people in west Norfolk.

He said: “As part of this commitment we work closely with West Norfolk Council whenever we plan new housing in the area, ensuring that we only build properties that there is a genuine demand for.

“Having spoken to Mr Reynolds about Keeble Court we understand that he is disappointed that the six ground floor flats at this particular development would not be suitable for his needs.

“However, as an organisation we have many properties throughout the area which have had adaptions made to them, so that they are suitable homes for a wide range of prospective tenants. As an example almost 1,300 of our 7,000 properties (just under 20 per cent of our housing stock) have a level access shower.

“We would hope that a suitable home will become available to Mr Reynolds soon, either with Freebridge or any of the other housing providers working in the area, and in the mean time we will continue to work with him to provide whatever help we can.”
