Can you help hogs in need? Hedgehog rescue in Terrington St Clement appeals for drivers
Two hedgehog rescue centres are appealing for more drivers to deliver hogs in need so they can get urgent treatment.
Emma’s Hedgehog Hotel and Ryston Rachel's Hedgehog Rescue are rescue centres dedicated to looking after injured or sick hedgehogs.
One founder, Emma Pickering said that the cost of living crisis is affecting the current team of drivers picking up hedgehogs in need.
To combat this, Emma has suggested forming relays so drivers wouldn’t have to travel so far.
For example, one person could pick up a hog in need from Heacham and drive it to Knights Hill to meet another driver who can take it to the rescue centre in Terrington St Clement.
Emma said: “People are watching what they’re spending, we’re trying to encourage more people to take up driver roles.”
The hog hotel takes in hedgehogs in the West Norfolk area but also travels as far as Wisbech and Spalding.
“We’re looking for drivers in Heacham, Hunstanton, Dersingham, Dereham, Snettisham,Wisbech, long Sutton and Spalding,” said Emma.
Emma’s Hedgehog Hotel runs completely on the help of volunteers, Emma said: “I’m really worried about the current economic climate and going forward.
“It’s going to affect our fabulous team of whatsapp drivers being able to pick up all those hoglets, juveniles or any hedgehog in need.
“Lots of hedgehogs will die unnecessarily subject to flies, dehydration, parasite burden, dog attacks or road traffic accidents.”
Both of the rescue centres share a team of drivers.
If you want to help Hedgehogs in need, Emma said you need to keep some gloves and a carrier box in your car when picking up a hedgehog.
