Local knowledge counted when Heacham Manor Golf Club held their annual Mixed Open competition on Saturday in sunny, but very windy conditions.

Even with a competitive field, high scores were going to be tough and expected in the mixed fourball format event.

Some 18 pairs from Heacham Manor and other clubs from across East Anglia and further afield competed for the crystal bowl. Other superb prizes included a Titleist golf bag. With first and second prizes for the home and away teams there was plenty to play for. It was soon evident that local experience playing in exposed windy courses had helped.

Searles captain Rob Hills and his wife Teresa took second place in the visiting teams, with Jason Willis and Diane Willis beating them on countback both on 35 points. The home club competition saw Jayne Clarke and Giles Debenham on 38 points beaten into second by Heacham Manor’s Ladies captain Rachel Hodgkinson playing with John Eaton who scored an impressive 42 points, also collecting the overall winner’s crystal bowl.

A ‘nearest the pin’ was won for the men on the 15th hole by Jason Willis and for the ladies on the 17th hole by Hodgkinson. A ‘nearest the line’ was won by Heacham Manor member Angela Boon and a 2’s pot was split between Jason Willis and Alex Richardson.

Seniors captain Graham Gerrishsaid: “It was great to see a good turnout, with excellent prizes. A big thanks to all the competitors and the team that put the event together.”
