Dreams of becoming a tattooist have been boosted for a Fairstead mother after her design has been selected for the final of a national competition.

Helen Hamer, who turns 32 on Monday, entered a Design Your Own Tattooed Car contest being run by vehicle company Lexus.

With plenty of time to pursue her passion during lockdown, Mrs Hamer spent five hours on her design which has been chosen as one of eight finalists across the UK.

The winner will be notified by Friday, July 17 and will be invited to a studio to be professionally photographed as a permanent reminder of their achievement.

Mrs Hamer’s design features red roses, which are a popular motif in tattooing, as well as butterflies and pearls.

She created her design for the Lexus competition via graphics editor app Procreate on her iPad.

Mrs Hamer said: “I did not think I would get near the next stage. I have started a portfolio of art work to hopefully get an apprenticeship.

“Due to being furloughed at the moment, it’s all I have done during lockdown. It’s been a bit of a blessing of disguise to spend more time pursuing my dream.

“One of my earliest memories is my parents giving me an art set and I was over the moon. I have been into art since I was a kid but lockdown has given me confidence of using Procreate.”

Speaking about her design, she said: “I added the pearls to add some flow to the car’s body and give it a feeling of motion.”

Scott Brownlee, Lexus head of PR, said: “The competition certainly captured imaginations and we were delighted by the skill and craftsmanship displayed and the sheer variety of designs, inspired by everything from space travel to jellyfish.

“We received entries from all over the UK, and even from as far afield as Japan. We look forward to turning the winning design into a wrap that will give the Lexus UX and a truly unique look.”

The final designs will be put to a public vote in a world cup-style tournament on Instagram Stories www.instagram.com/lexusuk/ and Facebook polls www.facebook.com/LexusUK/.
