Cash and designer specs snatched in double Downham burglary

Residents of Downham were shocked on Sunday morning as they were greeted with the aftermath of not one, but two break-ins in the town centre.

Spectacular Opticians, which stocks stacks of designer eye-wear and King's Estate agents both had their windows smashed.

PC Lee Anderton, community officer for Downham, told the Lynn News: "The investigation is ongoing and so far we don't know who is responsible for the theft.

"Cash was taken from King's and over a dozen pairs of glasses from Spectacular.

"The staff are pretty shaken, and came out on a Sunday to clear up."

Stuart Gibbs, managing director of Spectacular said: "Around £2250 worth of glasses were taken from our display.

"From the CCTV what appeared to be a young male used a sledgehammer to break the bottom panel of glass in our door.

"He was in and out very quickly.

"He was wearing a hood so we couldn't identify him.

"The incident took place at 12.30 at night according to the recording, but it's strange considering tat most people will be coming out of the pubs at that time

on a Saturday.

"No witnesses have come forward."

Spectacular is located next to Morrisons supermarket.

It appeared likely the thief would have had to climb over the Morrisons gates to gain entry, as they get locked at night.

Stuart has confirmed this, "It's a secure area, ththiefif must have had to scale a wall."

PC Anderton said: "There is a large group of youths that hang around the market square, but there is no evidence that indicates any of them are responsible."
