Children unite in remembrance at King's Lynn memorial

Dozens of schoolchildren have honoured the Fallen of the two World Wars and other conflicts during a event in Lynn.

Pupils from up to 12 West Norfolk schools have been turning plastic drinks bottles into poppies and wreaths for a project led by Lynn's Royal British Legion branch.

And they went to the town's Tower Gardens yesterday to hang them from the railings there.

Royal British Legion community support officer Karin Hipkin said: "I wanted to develop an initiative that would involve young people and encourage them to think about the importance of the poppy appeal and the annual act of remembrance for those who lost their lives.

"I hope the display captures the attention and hearts of others who will also take time to remember those who fought for us."

Borough mayor Geoff Hipperson was among the officials who attended the event and also tied his own poppy to the railings.

He said: "Community involvement is so important when paying tribute to the fallen.

"I would urge people to come along to look at the children's work and take a moment to remember the sacrifices made by others."

The ceremony also saw the unveiling of two new wrought iron benches commemorating the First World War which have been purchased by West Norfolk Council in conjunction with the Rotary Club of King's Lynn.

Borough council deputy leader Elizabeth Nockolds said: "These benches make a fitting tribute to the soldiers who lost their lives as well as bringing benefit to users of the park who wish to sit and ponder for a while.
